It’s time to enter into His Rest
How can we enter His rest at the busiest time of year? Let’s look to Scripture for answers to this question.
“For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. (Hebrews 4:10-11 NLT)
We see from these verses that we can rest from our labors. It is healthy in every way to take a Sabbath day of rest each week just like God did when He rested on the seventh day, and yes, even during the holiday season.
“On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.” (Genesis 2:2-4 NLT)
God wants us to rest as well.
“So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today.” (Hebrews 4:7 NLT)
Here are some of the benefits of a day of rest according to an article that was written by INC. entitled “A day of Rest: 12 Scientific Reasons it Works”
-
- Time out reduces stress.
- Time out gives you a chance to move.
- Completely divesting from your work on a regular basis reduces inflammation and the risk of heart disease.
- Getting away from work boosts your immune system.
- Speaking of sleep, you’ll do it better during a time out of work.
- Your active time off adds years to your life.
- Taking regular time away from work restores mental energy.
- When you take out time for yourself, you’re more creative.
- You’re also more productive when you take time out from work.
- You’ll focus better at work if you take your weekly rejuvenation time.
- Your day off improves short-term memory.
- With regular time away from work, you might even love your job again!
According to Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary rest has many meanings. Here are a few:
-
- “A state of quiet or repose; a cessation from motion or labor; tranquility; as, rest from mental exertion; rest of body or mind.”
- Also “Hence, freedom from everything which wearies or disturbs; peace, security.”
- To lean in confidence; to trust; to rely, to repose without anxiety; as, to rest on a man’s promise.
Resting in the Lord means finding that state of quietness or repose.
“I have calmed and quieted my soul.” Psalm 131:2
It also means we can stop working so hard whether in physical labor or mental or emotional labor. Maybe we spend a lot of emotional or mental labor trying to fix things, change things or make things happen.
“Stop striving and know that He is God”. (Psalm 46:10 NASB).
Other versions say, “Be still and know that He is God.”
It also means that we can let go of everything that wearies or disturbs us.
“Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear.” (Matthew 11:28-30 TPT)
We can enter His rest by coming to Him and bringing everything to Him in prayer. And when we do, He promises to give us His peace. After all, He is the Prince of Peace.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV)
We can rest in Him when we know He is our security.
Proverbs remind us “For the LORD is your security.” (Proverbs 3:26 NLT)
We can rest in Him when we place all our trust and confidence in His ability to lead and direct our paths even during this busiest time of year.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV)
We rest when we simply turn to Him.
“For thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15 NKJV)
It is during this time of year, the time of the hustle and bustle of shopping, cooking, and all the preparations that go along with the holiday season, that we need to be reminded, He still wants us to rest.
May I suggest that we step away from the busyness, from all the activities, from the stress of the season, from the many distractions, worries, and cares of this world, and come to the Lord?
“And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31 ESV)
Jesus sets the example for us. “It was very early in the morning and still dark. Jesus got up and left the house. He went to a place where he could be alone. There he prayed.” (Mark 1:35 NIV)
May we find our resting place in Him, friends, during this holiday season.
