Series on Spiritual Warfare
In this series of posts, we will discuss spiritual warfare and how it influences and impacts us as family members who have difficult situations in our families.
Part 11
We’ve discussed in previous posts, the first several pieces of armor Paul tells the believers at Ephesus to put on.
The next piece of armor Paul tells them to put on is the helmet of salvation. “Take the helmet of salvation…” (Ephesians 6:17)
A helmet is worn on one’s head as protection. You and I need God’s protection over our minds.
The battleground truly is in our thought life.
The enemy strikes at us with thoughts that can cause us to become defeated, discouraged, despondent, hopeless, fearful, doubting God, etc. We are protected against those fiery darts of the enemy when we keep our minds renewed with God’s Word and when we keep the helmet of salvation on.
The second part of Ephesians 6:17 tells us to take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. We need to protect our thought life with the Truth of God’s Word and the sword of the Spirit is the Truth.
When we do hear those lies of the enemy targeting our thoughts, we use the sword of the Spirit to combat them and refute them.
The Word of God is a living Word. It is like no other book ever written. It has the power to change lives. God responds to His Word. It produces powerful effects in our lives. Hebrews 4:12 tells us “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
The Word goes in like a jagger to our soul and helps us to see whether we are thinking, acting, and living according to His Word or whether we are missing the mark and thinking, acting, and living according to our own thoughts and desires, the world’s ways of thinking, and/or the lies of the enemy.
The Message Bible makes it plain “God means what he says. What he says goes. His powerful Word is sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey.” (Hebrews 4:12)
We must stay aware of our thought patterns and be ready to challenge them with God’s Word.
We as believers in Jesus Christ have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16) We have the hope and confident assurance of our salvation. (1 Thessalonians 5:8 AMP) Let us, therefore, live in these truths by daily renewing our minds with God’s Word. We want to know that it’s His Word that is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. (Psalm 119:105)
Let’s pray:
Father, I thank You that we have the mind of Christ as believers. Lord, I thank You that we renew our minds daily with the Word of God and when we do so, Your Word says we will be able to discern what is the good, pleasing and perfect will of God. Father, help us to wear the full armor of God. Lord, I pray that we will all keep our minds stayed on You. Lord, You promised, he whose mind is stayed on You, You will give perfect peace to. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen
