Series on Spiritual Warfare
In this series of posts, we will discuss spiritual warfare and how it influences and impacts us as family members who have difficult situations in our families.
Part 10
We are looking at the different pieces of God’s armor given to us from Ephesians 6:10-17
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
In previous posts we have talked about the first three pieces of armor, the belt of
truth buckled around your waist, the breastplate of righteousness in place, your
feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace, and today we
continue with talking about the shield of faith.
Scripture says “don’t forget to raise the shield of faith above all else, so that you will be able to extinguish flaming spears hurled at you from the wicked one.” (Ephesians 6:16 TPT)
Your shield of faith is your Rhema words God gives to you. It is His promise(s) to you. When you read His Word and certain Scripture verses, phrases, words or passages leap out at you as if God is standing right there with you speaking directly to you, these are your Rhema words. They are the words that bring you life in that moment. They are the words that quicken your spirit and allow you to know, that God is talking to YOU, personally. They are words that resonate deeply within your spirit. They are the words of a loving Father who loves His child and longs to speak to you. They minister to you deep in your soul. Hold onto these words. Memorize them. Write them somewhere where you will see them and they will remind you of what He has said to you.
Then when the enemy throws those arrows of doubt, unbelief, fear, discouragement, shame, unworthiness, anger, hopelessness, or whatever arrows he throws at you, you can take those promises, those Rhema words, and hold them up as a shield of faith by speaking them out. In other words, you extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one by holding up the shield of faith, the Rhema words, and speaking them out. They are Truth and they are Life. Hold them out as a shield when you are targeted in your mind with all kinds of negative thoughts and emotions. Speak them over yourself. Tell the devil this is what God says. And meditate on the Truth of His Word to you. This will extinguish his flaming darts!
When the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness, He responded to Him with the Word of God. (see Matthew 4)
- You want to fall out of the agreement, no matter how you feel, with those thoughts and feelings that come from the enemy, like spears in your heart, by holding to the Word of Truth and holding it up as a shield. It’s your shield of faith because it takes faith to hold onto the promises of God when everything around you and within you runs contrary to those Rhema words. Let’s look at some possible examples of feelings you might experience because of the challenges you are going through in your family. Here are just a few examples of Scriptures to hold up as a shield of faith when your emotions overwhelm you. When you feel rejected and afraid.
You remind yourself what God says: “I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:9-10 - When you feel anxious. You remind yourself what God says: “Cast all your anxiety on him
because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7 - When you feel afraid to have a tough conversation with a family member for any number of reasons: You remind yourself what God says: “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6-8 NJKV
- When your heart is overwhelmed. You remind yourself of what God says: “From the end of the earth I will cry to You. When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I” Psalm 61:2 NKJV
I pray that you, my friend, will have Rhema Words tucked in your heart from God that will help you when those times come when your emotions rise up, the negative thoughts start to bombard your mind and you need a word at that time to strengthen and encourage you. This is a piece of armor that we must be equipped with. Take time with the Lord, search the Scriptures and find verses that pertain to your situation, so that in your time of need, you will have those Scriptures readily available and you will be able to hold up the shield of faith against the fiery attacks of the enemy.
Next time, we will look at the helmet of salvation.
Until then, stay strong in the Lord and in His mighty power (Ephesians 6:10) knowing He is with You (Isaiah 43:5), He is fighting your battles for you (Deuteronomy 3:22) and He is a faithful warrior. (Exodus 15:3)
